KOCHI: The Western Ghats that play a major role in ensuring the ecological balance of the State has turned ecologically fragile, U.K. Gopalan, environmentalist, has said. In his address at the workshop on regional environmental studies organised by the Ernakulam committee of the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad here, Dr. Gopalan said that the filling of paddy fields will pose a serious threat to the environment. He also released a study on the impact of granite quarries in Kizhakambalam. Reports on the impact of sand-mining and filling of paddy fields in Kunnathunadu panchayat were also presented on the occasion.
