KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Thursday that he was deeply saddened by the sudden death of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Conveying his condolences to the bereaved family, Mr. Bhattacharjee said he had known Dr. Reddy well and on several occasions discussed a variety of issues with him in New Delhi and Hyderabad. “The passing away of Dr. Reddy was a major loss to the entire country. This sudden death is a real tragedy for the people of his State and the country,” he said. Minister for Sports and Youth Services Kanti Ganguly will be going to Hyderabad to pay his last respects to Dr. Reddy on behalf of the West Bengal government. Leader with a vision for uplift of poor: MamataStaff Reporter writes: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled Dr. Reddy’s death, saying “the country has lost a leader who served with dedication and commitment.” In a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau here on Thursday, Ms. Banerjee said he had a “strong vision towards upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden.” Recalling the “pioneering welfare measures and administrative reforms” he undertook to “ensure delivery of social security to the needy ones,” she said the “void created by his demise would be difficult to fill.” Earlier, speaking to a local private television channel, Ms. Banerjee said her party would fly its flag at half-mast to mourn the Congress leader as “both parties belonged to the same family”. Able administrator: MayawatiSpecial Correspondent writes from Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in a condolence message, said Dr. Reddy was a popular politician and an able administrator and it would be difficult to fill the vacuum created in Andhra Pradesh and the country by his untimely death. She also mourned the officials and pilots who were killed in the copter crash.
