Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: The Centre has made available 20.45 lakh tonnes of sugar for the festival month of September.

Of this, 2.11 lakh tonnes is levy, 14 lakh tonnes non-levy, 1.34 lakh tonnes from dismantled buffer stock, 2 lakh tonnes imported raw sugar converted into refined and 1 lakh tonne the expected availability of imported refined sugar.

According to the Ministry of Food, 20.45 lakh tonnes of sugar is sufficient to meet the domestic demand for September. At the same time, the Centre has decided to introduce a system of fortnightly sale for non-levy sugar quota. Sugar mills would now be required to sell their monthly free-sale quota of sugar on fortnightly basis, in two equal instalments. The mills have to report the actual sale and dispatch each fortnight to the Directorate of Sugar.
