Nature’s story: Sea incursion threatens the coastal community at Chinnamudaliar Chavadi in Villupuram district. —

VILLUPURAM: Collector R. Palanisamy on Friday visited Chinnamudaliar Chavadi, a coastal village located off East Coast Road near here, to assess the damage caused by sea incursion.

He told reporters that in the past two days, the sea was rough and strong waves were eroding the coastal area, threatening tenements. This prompted had the residents to stage a road roko on Wednesday.

Mr. Palanisamy said that as a protective measure, groynes had already been placed along the coast at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh with provision for berthing boats. However, they weren’t of much help.

Mr. Palanisamy said that an expert team deputed by the Central Environment Department recently studied sea incursion in the area. A permanent solution could be arrived at by Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments after the team submits its report.

The Collector urged the residents not to resort to road blockades till then.

A total of 263 dwelling units were being built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at an estimated cost of Rs. 9 crore to provide safe shelter to coastal residents, Mr. Palanisamy said.

These units would be ready for occupation by December. More houses would be built in the area later, if necessary. Mr. Palanisamy visited the construction site and directed the officials to expedite the work.

Officials of the Public Works Department from Villupuram and Puducherry accompanied him.
