Special court for disposal of land dispute cases sought

Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: Managing Trustee of the Shantaveri Gopala Gowda Samajwadi Adhyayana Kendra Trust Kallur Megharaj has urged Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to set up a special court to ensure the expeditious disposal of pending cases pertaining to land disputes under the Land Reforms Act.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that 35,000 cases relating to land reforms disputes were pending unresolved in various courts in the State and the setting up of a special court would help settlement of the pending cases at one stretch.

He said that lakhs of tenancy holders in the State had obtained title deeds when then Chief Minister late Devaraj Urs introduced the revolutionary land reforms law based on the ideology, “tiller is the owner of the land”, in 1974.

Mr. Megharaj said that in some cases, disputes were reported between land lords and tenancy holders. These cases were pending in courts since 35 years, he added.

He said that the former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa, had set up appellate tribunals at the district-level during his regime in 1992 to help farmers avoid approaching the State appellate tribunal.

Mr. Megharaj warned that if the State Government failed to take any concrete decision in this connection and abolish the tenancy system, then a hunger strike would be staged in front of the Chief Minister’s residence in Bangalore.

The former MLC, G. Madappa, and activist Kadidal Shamanna were present.
