Kolkata: Two supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were killed allegedly by some Congress-backed miscreants at Kapashdanga village in Beldanga of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Friday. The victims, Mirajul Sheikh (30) and Azmat Ali (27), were attacked by bombs. While Mr. Sheikh died on the spot, Mr. Ali died on the way to the Beldanga Rural Hospital. Three CPI(M) supporters were injured. The assailants dumped Mr. Sheikh’s body in a nearby lake. District Superintendent of Police B.L. Meena told The Hindu over telephone that prima facie a “long-standing tension” between the Congress and CPI(M) supporters in the area was the reason for the attack. 15 arrested“We have arrested 15 persons and search is on for more persons suspected to be connected with the incident. A police picket has been posted in the village and the situation is under control now,” Mr. Meena said. The village witnessed violence due to a turf war between CPI(M) and Congress supporters two days ago, in which several persons on both sides were injured. Abul Kasem, secretary of the CPI(M)’s Beldanga local committee, alleged that the local Congress leadership was trying to create terror in the area and drive out all CPI(M) supporters in a bid to capture the local panchayat.
