Ananda Salai is to be a Guinness record attempt


Traffic wardens are keen to change the attitudes of people in the city, writes V.S.Palaniappan


Road safety primarily comprises three key factors namely Engineering, Education and Enforcement.

Traffic Wardens Organisation of the Coimbatore City Police along with Road Safety Patrol is organising Ananda Salai, an attempt to create a Guinness world record for Coimbatore City, Chief Traffic Warden, A. Mahesh said. The catch phrase for the progr amme is “Accident Free Miles i.e., one lakh Smiles on the Roads”.

Mr.Mahesh said that tolerance level in various sections of people directly depended on the level of acceptance of other’s mistakes. Continuous irregular movement of vehicular traffic increases frustrations leading to congestions and accidents.

Traffic Wardens Organisation wanted to change this attitude of the general public.

For which Traffic Wardens pointed out that such attempts need to be more interestingly innovative and with direct public participation.

While driving, a motorist always tends to reflect his state of mind in a sub conscious level. Hence, the effort would be to make motorist spread smiles.

Mr.Mahesh said that the event to be conducted for three days shortly in Coimbatore will be featuring more than 50 pavilions showcasing one specific road safety subject each.

The pavilions will be handled by 4,000 Road Safety Patrol cadets from schools and colleges and they will be first educated and trained in specific subjects.

They will be certified as experts and then they in turn would educate the public at the event.

The objective was to inculcate positive public attitude towards traffic and create a sense of belonging to the society.

Based on age groups, the three day event is divided into three stages.

Around 15 pavilions each are created to talk about various subjects of road safety every day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In Stage 1, 15 individual pavilions are created for this category with each one subject each.

Basic list of subjects to be covered are: road safety alphabets, traffic signs, police hand signals, light controlled crossing, crossing the road, stop signals, traffic islands, road safety patrol (a pavilion of RSP cadets), driving licence and its needs (a pavilion of RTO officials).

Stage II will have 18 pavilions for those in the age group of 18 to 25: beginning to drive (a pavilion of driving institute instructors), driving on the road (a pavilion of driving institute instructors), drivers behaviour patterns (a pavilion of traffic psychologist), defensive training, reversing and parking (a pavilion of four wheeler manufacturers), breaking without breaks (a pavilion of two-wheeler manufacturers), priority for emergency vehicles, right of way, hand signals, road markings, stopping distance, give way, mandatory signs, lane discipline, save yourself first, counselling, clarify your doubts and make a promise.

Fifteen individual pavilions are created for this category with one subject each.

Basic list of subjects to be covered are as follows; how dependable is your vehicle and vehicle control in situations – pavilions by four wheeler manufacturers, manoeuvring a vehicle – a pavilion of driving institute instructors, drivers responsibility, driving regulations and speed regulations and fines, towing – pavilions by traffic police, road user characteristics, the other side of accidents – a pavilion by traffic investigation wing, victims and family – a pavilion by hospitals, counselling, clarify your doubts, traffic wardens organisations, First Aid and Emergency procedures – a pavilion of EMRI and hospitals and make a promise pavilion.
