Doctors told not to fight shy of innovations

Special Correspondent

Symposium on Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

CHENNAI: A two-day workshop and symposium on Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), being organised by KKR ENT Hospital and Research Institute, got under way here on Friday.

Hand and Plastic Surgeon R. Venkataswami, who spoke at the inaugural session, urged the younger generation of doctors not to fight shy of innovating in the field of medicine. He also advised them to document their work and publish in peer-reviewed journals. It was also the doctors’ task to serve the poor in rural areas.

The workshop and symposium is being attended by nearly 300 ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons from India, Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia and New Zealand. Live surgical demonstrations will be made on basic and advanced techniques in endoscopic sinus surgery.

He wanted young doctors, particularly those working in public hospitals, to reach the masses in some form or the other, as nearly 80 per cent of the country’s population lived below the poverty line, especially in the rural areas.

FESS is performed with the aid of nasal endoscopes through the nose, avoiding scars. The patients are usually discharged the same or next day after surgery. Done under local anaesthesia, a small pack will be kept on the nose after the surgery, which will be removed before the patient is discharged.

FESS cures most of the sinus conditions and recurrence rate is only two per cent, Ravi Ramalingam of KKR ENT Hospital explained. Complications are mostly nil, he added.
