Scales tilted in favour of Congress after 15 TDP men joined the party recently YSR demise may cast a shadow on future of those who joined the Congress ADILABAD: The unprecedented intense political activity in the Adilabad unit of the Congress during the second term of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as Chief Minister has projected his party as a considerably strong unit. It was his charisma and inspiring personality as a strong leader that made it possible even for those who had lost in the last elections to look formidable politicians. Perhaps, the most important of current political events in the State came from Adilabad district in July when a dozen (15 in all) Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) members joined the Congress tilting the scales in the Adilabad Zilla Parishad in favour of the ruling party. This event is believed to have started the deluge of political defections, nicknamed ‘operation akarsh’, across Andhra Pradesh. Adilabad ZP, considered a stronghold of the TDP, would have been presented on a platter to Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as a Congressman will, anyway, be elected to the Chairman’s post after the September 8 byelection given the changed equation in this local body institution. Untimely demiseThe political developments of the recent past related to the ZP had projected the Congress here as a coherent and strong force. The untimely demise of the Chief Minister is not likely to impede the Congress from gaining control of the Zilla Parishad, but it will certainly bring out intra party groupism to the fore besides casting a shadow on the future of those politicians who had joined the Congress because of their faith in the leadership of Rajasekhara Reddy. Animosity suppressedIt was the firmness exhibited by him that suppressed the animosity between the groups headed by Legislative Council Member K. Premsagar Rao and others led by District Congress Committee president C. Ramchander Reddy and Nirmal strongman A. Indrakaran Reddy. The plans of the few important opposition leaders in the district who crossed over in the recent past may go awry in the wake of the sad incident.
