ALAPPUZHA: The timely intervention of a person living near the coastal railway tracks helped in avoiding a major train accident here on Sunday after a crack was found in the tracks. According to Railway sources, Srikumar, who lives near the Kalapurackal temple at Neerkunnam in Ambalapuzha near here, had noticed that the Thiruvananthapuram-Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi Express had passed by at 8.30 a.m. with an unusual sound. Srikumar checked the railway tracks and found that a welded joint had come off, leaving a small gap between the tracks. He immediately informed the Ambalapuzha Station Master. Railway officials, with help from locals, had to toil for over an hour, braving the heavy rain to fix the snag. — Staff Reporter
