Mallappuzhassery wins regatta

PATHANAMTHITTA: The famous Uthrittathi boat race was held in the Pampa at Aranmula on Sunday afternoon.

Snake-boats (palliyodams) belonging to the Mallappuzhassery and Edappavoor palliyoda karayogams won the race in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ categories respectively.

The winners were presented the Mannam trophy. The Maramon and Mangalam palliyodams came second in the races held as part of the annual regatta. The palliyodams of Melukara and Arattupuzha won the R. Sankar trophy in the A and B categories for their performance in the pageantry held prior to the race. As many as 30 snake-boats took part in regatta.

Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran inaugurated the regatta at 2 p.m. and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar presided over the inaugural function.

Swami Amritaswaroopananda Puri, vice-chairman of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, lighted the ceremonial lamp.

Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma, Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church, and P. Parameswaran, director of the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram, delivered the keynote address.

Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran released a souvenir brought out by the Palliyoda Seva Sanghom.

Prof. P.J. Kurien, Congress chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, and P.S. Nair, Central Travancore Development Council chairman, were honoured on the occasion.

Mr. Vijayakumar presented the newly instituted Sports Minister’s Trophy to the Mallapuzhassery palliyodam.

The winners were given a cash prize of Rs.25,001 each instituted by P.S. Nair.

K.N. Viswanathan, Nair Service Society director board member, presented the Mannam trophy to the winners.
