Connoisseurs’ delight: Noted Carnatic music exponent Nedunuri Krishna Murthy releasing the felicitation issue on P. Suseela compiled by Bharago in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. S. Vijay Kumar of Vijay Nirman and Director of Centre for Policy Studies A. Prasanna Kumar are also seen. — VISAKHAPATNAM: “She brought respect and honour to film songs. She classicised popular music and popularised classical music. She is the brightest star in the world of films. She is a gift of god for connoisseurs of music. Any song rendered by her mellifluous voice will acquire the touch of class. Many songs were immortalised by her golden voice.” These were some of the encomiums and epithets showered on P. Suseela, who was honoured with Padmabhushan in 2008 and whom many describe as ‘empress of music’. The speakers included A. Prasanna Kumar, who presided over the function, reputed vocalist and Naada Vidyaa Bhaarathi Nedunuri Krishna Murthy and Veluri Sithalakshmi. The occasion was the release of ‘Suseela Abhinandana Sanchika’ compiled by noted writer ‘Bharago’ (Bhamidipati Rama Gopalam) at the Kalabharathi auditorium here on Sunday. This event was organised by Jyeshta Literary Trust and Visakha Music Academy. Giving the background of the book, Prof Prasanna Kumar said that the idea of writing a book on Suseela by Bharago was conceived way back in 2003, concretised in 2006 and was released today. The book containing interesting details of Suseela should be owned by connoisseurs of music. Mr. Nedunuri Krishna Murthy asserted that there was nothing like ‘saastreeya sangeetham’. That which touched the hearts of people and that which was enjoyed by people was music. A contemporary of Ghantasala in music college, he said that musical voices of Ghantasala and Suseela were unmatched and they had ensured a place of honour to film music. Ms. Sita Lakshmi called Suseela a gem in the world of music. She recalled how difficult it was to select just about 200 songs for the book from the 40,000-odd songs sung by Suseela. Earlier, promising singers, who included Ramakrishna, Akhila, Sowmya, Janyanth Madhav, Reena, Anupama, Manoharan, Jayalakshmi, Sasirani Hemalatha, sang some old and melodious hits of Suseela. The orchestra was provided by V. Sitaramaiah, a keyboard player and others.
