Jamal Mohammed in semifinals

TIRUCHI: Host Jamal Mohammed College defeated Union Christian College (Kerala) 4-1 and booked a place in the semifinals of the South India-level inter-collegiate hockey tournament for the Khajamian Trophy here on Sunday.

The results (quarterfinals): Jamal Mohammed 4 (Sathish 2, Manivannan, Nagendran) bt Union Christian (Kerala) 1 (Jitheesh).

St. Joseph’s, Tiruchi 3 (Arun, Kulandai Arockiyam, Anand) bt Vidyasagar, Udumalpet 0.

D.B. Jain, Chennai bt Thiagarajar EC, Madurai 4-3 (tie-breaker).

American, Madurai bt Loyola, Chennai 3-2 (tie-breaker).

Inter-zonal qualifiers

Bishop Heber College (BHC) and St. Joseph’s College (SJC) qualified for the Bharathidasan University inter-zonal football tournament from Tiruchi zone. Jamal Mohammed and St. Joseph’s advanced to the inter-zonal stage in ball badminton.

The results:

Football: Semifinals: Bishop Heber bt Jamal Mohammed 4-3 (tie-breaker); St. Joseph’s bt National 5-0. Third place: Jamal Mohammed bt National 4-0.

Ball badminton: Semifinals: St. Joseph’s bt Nehru Memorial 29-5, 29-9; Jamal Mohammed bt Urumu Dhanalakshmi 29-11, 29-6. Third place: Urumu Dhanalakshmi bt Nehru Memorial 29-16, 29-17.

Easy for Jeppiar

Jeppiar Engineering College scripted a comfortable 31-13 win over SKR Engineering College to win the title at the Anna University inter-zonal women’s basketball tournament at PAB CET on Saturday.

The results: Final: Jeppiar 31 (Victoria 12) bt SKR 13. Third place: SIT 45 bt Periyar Maniammai 15.

Savitha Bai HSS wins title

Savitha Bai HSS, with 21 points at the end of the league stage, won the title in the Madurai DFA inter-school under-11 football tournament held as part of AFC’s Vision India programme in Madurai on Sunday.

St. Charles MHSS (18 points) and TVS MHSS (15 points) finished second and third respectively.

R. Sadacharam, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Football Association gave away the prizes.

The results (league): TVS MHSS 1 (Vignesh) bt Lakshmi School 0; TVS HSS 1 (Kasiraj) bt Fuscos MHSS 0.

Double for Manikandan

M.R. Manikandan of Chennai won the men’s singles and doubles titles at the Yonex State senior badminton championship here on Sunday.

Men: Singles: M.R. Manikandan (Che) bt Siddarth Jain (Che) 21-19, 3-1 (retd.). Doubles: M.R. Manikandan & Siddarth Jain bt Aditya Elango & Vijay Aloysius 17-21, 21-6, 21-16.

Women: Singles: S. Archana (Cbe) bt A. Priya (Che) 21-14, 21-13. Doubles: A. Priya & K. Suneri bt Anees Kowser and Amrin Mubarak 23-21, 20-22, 21-13.
