Panel to chalk out plans to revive Arkavathi

Staff Reporter

Raising awareness: Save Arkavathi River Vedike members taking out a padayatra in Bangalore on Sunday.

Bangalore: “Save Arkavathi padayatra” launched by the legislators from Bangalore, environmentalists and members of non-governmental organisations five days ago from the Nandi Hills, culminated at the Tippagondanahalli Reservoir near here on Sunday.

Memorandum

Receiving a memorandum from them, Transport Minister R. Ashoka said that a high-level committee comprising Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy, BWSSB Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu and Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai would be constituted to chalk out plans to revive the Arkavathi and her tributaries.

Mr. Ashoka said that steps were being taken to prevent disposal of industrial wastes in the valley from over 170 units located close to the river.

The river basins had been encroached upon right from the origin of the Arkavathi and Kumudawati. The Government would take steps to clear the encroachment, the Minister added.

The Government had released Rs. 2 crore to undertake a preliminary survey to identify encroachment upon river basins and tanks. Indiscriminate sand mining too had affected the flow of water in the Arkavathi and her tributaries. The Government would keep in mind this aspect while launching the Sand Mining Policy, Mr. Ashoka said.
