CPI(M) criticises Centre’s policies

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday said the tenure of the UPA government in its second term confirmed that it would continue with its neo-liberal policies.

The party criticised the Centre’s handling of the drought situation and described the proposed direct tax code as “regressive.”

With the UPA completing 100 days in office, the Polit Bureau, while reviewing the political situation at its two-day meet, noted the disarray in the BJP and the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in working for a resolution of the crisis, despite its claims that it does not interfere in the BJP’s affairs. In a statement, the Polit Bureau said the Centre had announced it would further liberalise foreign direct investment in various sectors, go in for disinvestment of profitable PSUs on the pretext of ensuring “people’s participation in the public sector,” and provide further tax concessions to the corporate sector.

“The direct tax code is regressive. Persons earning above Rs. 10 lakh annually get a cut in their tax rates, corporate taxes are being reduced from 30 to 25 per cent and there is a further dilution of the wealth tax. This at a time when big business has earned enormous profits and the wealth of the richer sections has increased substantially,” it said.
