A play within a play

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Mahesh Dattani’s “Brief Candle” took a packed audience on an emotional rollercoaster ride at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall here on Sunday.

The play opens with a comic scene. A few acts later, the audience discover that the characters of the play were all the while rehearsing a comic play written by a terminally ill patient Vikas who died recently. So, it is a play within a play. Through the play, characters shift from the state of being happy to losing hope in life. However, it is Vikas’s play that keeps them happy and engaged.

The play conveys the need to live life with enthusiasm even if the end is imminent.
