NEW DELHI: India’s dismal run in the World women team chess championship continued when it lost to leader Poland 1-3 in the fifth round at Ningbo, China, on Sunday. After losing by a similar margin to favourite China One and Georgia, India could only manage two draws even against lower-rated Poland. The defeat pushed India to the joint eighth spot with USA, ahead of only last-placed Vietnam in the 10-team competition. D. Harika suffered her first loss after facing Iweta Zawadzka for 43 moves. Tania’s disastrous form led her to a fourth loss in as many appearances following a 51-move surrender to Jolanta Zawadzka. Eesha maintained her unbeaten sequence after a short 13-move draw on the third board. Kruttika Nadig did well to hold her higher-rated rival. In two key encounters of the day, Armenia surprised Georgia while Russia held favourite China One. The results (fifth round): India lost to Poland 1-3 (D. Harika lost to Iweta Zawadzka; Tania Sachdev lost to Jolanta Zawadzka; Eesha Karavade drew with Joanna Dworakoswka; Kruttika Nadig drew with Karina Szczepkowska-Horowska); Russia drew with China One 2-2; Ukraine bt Vietnam 3.5-0.5; Armenia bt Georgia 2.5-1.5; China Two bt USA 2.5-1.5.
