Gambhir turns test driver

CHENNAI: Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir took the wheel of the brand new 1600cc Formula Ford car on Sunday, test-driving it for a lap around the Madras Motor Race Track here during a break in the ongoing Asian Road Racing Championship.

The MRF brand ambassador, however, did not quite blaze tread marks across the circuit.

“This was my first experience in a Formula car. I was nervous and excited. Now I realise it isn’t as easy as it looks from the outside… in fact it’s quite hard to drive it at a top speed,” he admitted.

The opening batsman said he used to follow Formula One racing “earlier”, and that his favourite team and driver were Ferrari and Michael Schumacher.

Launched in 2007, the 1600cc single-seater car will soon be part of a racing championship that will be flagged off later this year, MRF sources revealed. — Sports Reporter
