Set up traffic signals

Tuticorin does not have proper traffic signals or islands. On the way from the old bus stand to the new bus stand, there are almost three junctions without proper signals. As a result, the junctions are posing a grave danger to the lives of the pedestrians as well as motorists.

Traffic chaos are not uncommon near the construction site of the new rail overbridge, beside the new bus stand. The delay in finishing the overbridge and its construction activities are coming in the way of smooth traffic in the area. To put an end to it, the bridge construction should be completed as soon as possible. Further, the traffic island near the old bus stand does not have proper zebra lines. The haphazard parking of vehicles at the junction is also adding to the woes of the pedestrians.

Traffic congestion

Traffic congestion in the twin cities Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai has gone from bad to worse even though the traffic police are trying their best to regulate the same in all important junctions, especially at the Vannarpettai Chellapandian roundabout where the overbridge is under construction.

Increase in the number of vehicles, especially two wheelers, and inadequate road facilities are the main cause for this situation. At this juncture it would be more appropriate if wearing of helmet was made compulsory to motor cyclists. Already compulsory wearing of helmet is in practice in Tiruchi and Madurai. When will it be in Tirunelveli?

E. Rajakumar Arulanandham,

Palayamkottai.

Provide UPS at booking counter

In Tuticorin new bus stand, there is a counter of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to book tickets of State Express Transport Corporation buses. It is a computerised reservation booking counter. It has no UPS system to function continuously whenever power failure occurs. If anyone wants to cancel his ticket at the time of power outage, they could not do the cancelling. Also, they are not having manual cancelling system. We have to incur extra cancellation charges, owing to this, when the power resumes as the charges of cancelling is on hourly basis of before 48 hours, 24 hours, and 30 minutes of departure of the bus. For no fault of the commuter we have to face monetary loss.

Moreover, since the third gate construction is going on, people form the interior of the town had to travel a circuitous route to come to the booking counter and they have to make repeated visits to know about the power availability for cancelling the tickets.

V. Pandy,

Tuticorin.
