Court directive on funds for construction of churches
Legal Correspondent
HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the A.P. High Court comprising Chief Justice A.R.Dave and Justice C.V.Nagarjuna Reddy on Monday ordered status quo with regard to allotment and disbursement of funds by the State government for construction of churches in the State.
These interim orders were passed in a writ petition filed by T. Hanuman Chowdary who complained that the State government was releasing funds for construction of churches through out the State. He wondered whether a government which was secular can allot funds for one religion. Kodandaram Challa, senior counsel appearing for the petitioner contended that the scheme of the Constitution prohibits such payments by the governments. Along with the affidavit 40 GOs wherein allotments were for construction of more than 250 churches made by the government were filed. The Bench ordered status quo and asked the government explain how such scheme could be implemented.
