Spectacle: A section of Pamban rail bridge being lifted to facilitate passage of a barge near Rameswaram on Monday. RAMANATHAPURAM: The lifting portion of Pamban rail bridge was opened on Monday to allow a tugboat and a barge. The vessels were waiting in the north sea of Pamban for the last four days to cross the Pamban bridge. The port authorities denied permission for the vessels to cross the bridge due to strong wind and violent sea. Since the situation improved on Monday, they were given the green signal. Authorities said that the barge was one of the longest vessels to cross the bridge in the last three years. The barge weighing 1,300 tonnes was 200 feet long and 60 feet wide. The vessels were bound for Mumbai from Cuddalore via Tuticorin. A large number of tourists witnessed the lifting of the bridge.
