Like father, like son

YSR was not only an able administrator but also patience personified. He turned a deaf ear on the then Hyderabad Brothers – P. Janardhan Reddy and Marri Sashidhar Reddy – who criticised him in the media on a regular basis.

Even when his brother was beaten up by PJR’s family members, like a true Christian he blessed PJR’s son with a ticket to contest the Assembly seat fallen vacant due to PJR’s death. Similar was his attitude towards the MLAs and leaders from Telangana in the Congress when the latter accused him of being the lone obstacle for achieving separate statehood for Telangana. Also, as the leader of the Opposition, he showed more restraint compared to N. Chandrababu Naidu.

As chip of the old block, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy might be said to have inherited his qualities. For, he also could show remarkable restraint to handle media well when it grilled him in connection with the murder of Paritala Ravi a few years back.

And there is every reason why Jagan should be made Chief Minister now since he is riding high on the success of his father who was the only Congress leader with mass base and with a sympathy wave sweeping the State, says a senior Congress leader. After all, the party cannot afford to ignore public opinion, he points out.

IT’s not happening!

Management quota seats (computer courses) in professional colleges are available just for the fee of convener quota seats! Don’t be surprised. But, it’s true. Thanks to the impact of global economic recession on the IT sector, seats in computer courses, which were once in great demand, are going a begging. Hit hard by the campaign against computer courses, colleges are leaving no stone unturned to fill the vacant seats by offering different packages. With no demand in sight, several colleges chose to wind up such courses, while the newly established colleges are not offering these courses considering them as ‘untouchables’.

Play of words

Spontaneous outflow of powerful emotions. This is how some describe/define poetry. At meetings of literati graced by some noted intellectuals, there would be spontaneous outflow of wit and wisdom, instant repartee and inexhaustible repertoire. The Gayatri Vidya Parishad and the Centre for Policy Studies organized a lecture-meeting on ‘Idea of Justice’ a work by Nobel Laureate, Amartya Sen. Noted intellectuals like R.V.Chandrsekhara Rao, former Vice Chancellor of Dr.Ambedkar Open University, A. Prasanna Kumar, a former Rector of AU, known for his oratory, former Mayor and legal luminary, D.V. Subba Rao and a host of others turned up. It started with Mr. Subba Rao. ‘Familiarity breeds contempt’ was the cliché expression. “But familiarity with Prof. Chandrasekhara Rao breeds admiration,” Mr. Subba Rao said. “Some are born great, some achieve greatness and greatness is thrust on some,” is another such expression and Prof. Prasanna Kumar has the following to say while referring to a certain person. “Some are born small, some achieve smallness and smallness is thrust on some”.
