Awards for future stars

NEW DELHI: To encourage outstanding young talent in diverse fields of performing arts, Sangeet Natak Akademi will present the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar at a special investiture ceremony in Rabindra Bhavan here this Thursday.

Covering music, dance, theatre, puppetry and scholarship in performing arts, the awards for 2008 are intended to give talented artistes national recognition early in life so that they work with greater commitment and dedication in their lifelong pursuit.

This year the awards, given to performing artistes below the age of 35, will be presented by Akademi chairman Ram Niwas Mirdha.

33 artistes selected

Thirty-three young artistes who have excelled in their respective fields of performing arts have been selected from across the country.

In the field of music, awards will be presented to eight artistes including Rajnish Mishra and Ritesh Mishra (joint award) and Vishal Jain (Hindustani vocal); Jay Shankar Mishra (tabla) and Debopriya Chatterjee (flute) for Hindustani instrumental music; and V. Sumitra and Manasi Prasad (Carnatic vocal).

The awards for dance will be presented to eight artistes including Gayatri Balagurunathan (Bharatanatyam); Gauri Diwakar (Kathak); Vijaya Kumar N. (Kathakali); Bimbavati Devi (Manipuri); Rahul Acharya (Odissi); and Arunima Kumar (Kuchipudi).

For theatre, awards will be conferred on eight artistes including Sumeet Sharma and Amitesh Grover for direction; Vajinder Kumar and J. L. Saritha for acting; Irawati Karnik for playwriting; and Ajay Kumar for music for theatre.

The ceremony will be followed by a week-long festival of music, dance and theatre featuring some of the recipients.
