Poojashree gets off to a flying start

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Top-seeded Poojashree Venkatesh got off to a flying start in the Questnet-ITF women’s tennis tournament at the KSLTA courts here on Monday trouncing Subbadharmi Sundaram of the United States 6-0, 6-0 in just 58 minutes.

In the lone singles match of the day, Poojashree’s fluent forehand and the double-handed backhand proved too much for Subbadharmi, who did come up with some good returns. But it was her serve — Subbadharmi had a dozen double faults — which did her in.

Rest of the day’s programme saw spate of doubles matches. In the first upset of the tournament, Chun-Yan He of China and Dalila Jakupouvic of Slovakia knocked out the fourth seeded Indian pair of Treta Bhattacharya and Shivika Burman 6-3, 6-3.
