Tennis
Chennai: With the seeded players given first-round byes, the first day of the Indian Oil Golden Jubilee junior ITF tennis tournament offered no major surprises. Garry Singh Amor, Rohan Bhatia and Neena Reddy were among those who made it past the first round on Monday. Amor’s steadiness earned him a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Suraj Konwar. Bhatia played smartly for his 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Rashein Samuel. In the girls’ category, Neena Reddy beat Sripriya Sarraf 6-4, 6-1. Amor’s solid counter-hitting worked well against Konwar who had trouble finishing points. The latter mixed it up with decent approaches and volleys, but Amor was prepared to keep the ball in play and buy time. Amor consistently sent across a higher ball to unsettle his opponent, a ploy that worked well in the first set. Konwar did well to equalise after being 1-5 down in the first-set tiebreak, capitalising on Amor’s serve; but the latter managed to hang on to claim the tiebreak. Despite a shaky start in the second, Amor was comfortable enough from the back of the court to complete a straight-set win. In the girls’ under-18 first round, Neena Reddy eased past the error-prone Sarraf. Despite a brief interruption in the second set with a shoulder trouble, Reddy was in complete control. The results (under-18): First round (Indians unless otherwise specified): Boys: Adwait Sadwilkar bt Ansu Kumar Bhuyan 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3); Rishab Aggarwal bt Sabreesh Hariharan 6-2, 6-0; Rohan Bhatia bt Rashein Samuel 2-6, 6-2, 6-4; Garry Singh Amor bt Suraj Konwar 7-6 (5), 6-3; Vishwajit Tirumurti bt Kshitij Kamal 6-3, 6-3; Sagar Manjanna bt J.
