NALGONDA: In a revolting act, an impoverished couple allegedly sold their 10-month-old son for Rs. 17,000 to another couple in the town over a week ago.

The shocking incident came to light on Tuesday following a complaint lodged by the grandmother of the boy with the police on the alleged sale of her grandson.

According to sources, L Krishna, 30, a lorry driver and Yadamma, 25, of Padmanagar locality in the town, allegedly sold their son, L. Shiva, to R. Eraiah and Andalu of Panagal on September 1 and received Rs. 7,000 as advance from the latter. On learning about the alleged sale of the boy, Veladri, the mother of Yadamma, tried to persuade her daughter and son-in-law to bring her grandson back home. However, her attempts proved futile as the couple expressed their inability to take care of their son due to poverty and ill health.

Veladri lodged a complaint at the Two Town police station on Tuesday. Two Town SI Adi Reddy registered a case and took up investigation.

Meanwhile, the police sent the rescued boy to the home for orphan children run by the Women and Child Development Agency in the town.
