“People will be educated on crime prevention methods and safety” CHENNAI: A core group comprising members drawn from different walks of life will be formed to launch an intensive campaign christened ‘Safe Chennai’, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said on Tuesday. He said the core group would involve representatives from the industry, education, IT sector and residential welfare associations. “We are chalking out an agenda for the group that will serve as a bridge between the police and the public. Besides sensitising the people to basic security aspects, the group will interact with students, office-goers, residents and others periodically,” Mr. Rajendran said. To reach out to peopleThe ‘Safe Chennai’ campaign was intended to reach out to people in various segments of the society and educate them on crime-prevention methods and safety. “The awareness level is so low that some people get cheated by fraudsters who pose as police personnel and relieve them of their jewels. Many residents keep doors or windows open at night making it easy for thieves to operate. Basic security should start from home…the campaign is to sensitise the people and the core group will act as a catalyst.” Mr. Rajendran said that victims of chain-snatchings should alert the Police Control Room or the nearest police station/patrol vehicle at the earliest. On many occasions, victims informed the police hours after the incident, making it difficult for investigators to locate the suspects immediately. “On our part, we are doing everything possible to prevent crimes”, he said. The rate of detection and recovery has gone up in recent times. Special teams have been formed to apprehend suspects posing as policemen and cheating innocent people,” Mr. Rajendran added.
