CHENNAI: The Highways Department is giving an impetus to the execution of road overbridges (ROBs) and road underbridges (RUBs).

In the last two months, the department floated bids for 11 ROBs/RUBs, of which the tender process was initiated for nine facilities last month.

A senior official says that this year the department plans to invite tenders for 50 RUBs/ROBs this year. [The facilities are proposed in the place of railway crossing. On completion, the Railways and Highways are responsible for maintenance.]

As of now, work is under way for 20 facilities, the official says, adding that the total cost of all the projects is about Rs.365 crore.

Since May 2006 when the present government took office, 92 ROBs/RUBs were sanctioned.

This year, the Highways Department wants to initiate the work for 84 ROBs/RUBs, of which the Railways Department has given consent for 25.

The clearance of the Railways is awaited for 36 while the Highways Department is yet to send proposals for 23.

As for the 11 facilities for which the bids have been floated, two come under Kancheepuram district — one in Madurantakam and another in Urapakkam. While one will come up on Dargah Road in Chennai, Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district will have one.

Two important towns in the northern belt of the State — Vriddachalam and Cuddalore — are also covered while Ammainaickanur in Madurai district, Tenkasi, Udumalpet, Nilambur (near Coimbatore) and Pollachi will have one each.
