Gold, silver scale new peak

MUMBAI: Gold and silver touched historic highs on the bullion market here on Tuesday due to hectic buying by stockists driven by sharp movements in overseas markets.

In London, gold powered through the $1,000 an ounce psychological barrier on Tuesday, carried by weakness in the dollar.

Silver hit a 13-month high of $16.81 and was at $16.75 versus $16.29 an ounce.

In the domestic market, silver crossed the Rs. 26,000-mark, while gold was in the vicinity of Rs. 16,000-level.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) shot up by Rs. 135 per ten grams to Rs. 15,875 from Monday’s closing level of Rs. 15,740.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) strengthened by Rs. 500 a kg to Rs. 26,360. Silver had ended at Rs. 26,250 on July 15, 2008. — PTI
