BANGALORE: The Opposition in the Legislative Council on Wednesday took exception to confining the ongoing legislature session to discussing only rural development and demanded that they be allowed to discuss other important problems such as drought and A(H1N1). Leader of the Opposition V.S. Ugrappa and Janata Dal (S) leader M.C. Nanaiah pointed out that the session, which started on Wednesday, was not a “special session” as being claimed by the Government and it was only an “extended session” as per the records of the legislature secretariat. That being the case, the session should follow the legislature procedures and norms which provide for taking up serious problems for discussion, they maintained. ‘Official business’Mr. Nanaiah said the Government could only indicate the “official business” to be taken up by the legislature. The remaining issues in the agenda for discussion should be decided by the Business Advisory Committee and not the Government, he noted. Mr. Ugrappa said the Government should come out with a policy or a vision document on rural development so that the legislature could take up concrete discussion on specific issues. Any discussion on the issue without such a policy document would become vague, he noted. Besides, any discussion on rural development at this time would not help in policy formulation as the State budget had already been presented, he claimed.
