32 autorickshaws seized in joint drive

Week-long drive will be carried out in different parts of Madurai

Traffic police preparing a comprehensive list of commercial transport vehicles

MADURAI: A week-long combined drive by the traffic police and officers from the Regional Transport Office against violators of Motor Vehicles Act began in the city on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime and traffic) V. Jeyashri said that with growing vehicular movement in the city, regulating heavy vehicles and private commercial vehicles such as autorickshaws and share-autorickshaws had become essential. Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan reviewed the complaints and ordered for the drive.

It was decided to carry out checks at different locations in the city. Apart from verifying documents, including permits and licences, incidents of over-loading and over speeding would also be examined, Ms. Jeyashri said.

With lorry terminals thrown open at three locations in the city outskirts, idle parking of lorries within the city limits had been prohibited. Any lorry spotted in the city would be fined and, if warranted, the vehicle impounded.

The traffic police were in the process of preparing a comprehensive list of commercial transport vehicles operating in the city.

Police officers in charge of the special drive at Periyar bus stand told The Hindu that it had come to light that some share autorickshaw operators indulged in illegal and anti-social activities. Eve-teasing complaints were received from women who used these vehicles at Ellis Nagar, Arapalayam, Tallakulam and K. Pudur. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K. Magudapathi said that on the first day of the drive, 32 autorickshaws without permit were seized.
