PUDUCHERRY: A centre for performing arts will soon be set up at Puducherry. Public Works Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who also holds the Art and Culture portfolio, told The Hindu that the centre will be unique in South India, combining within its folds, art from India, France and from elsewhere in the world. The centre will be set up within the premises of the already-existing government multi-art institution Bharathiyar Palkalai Koodam (BPK). “It will be different from BPK, a more sophisticated institution,” he said. Research activities at the new centre will be included later, he added. Public-private partnershipInfrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) has been roped in to provide consultancy services for the centre. The setting up of the centre for performing arts was announced before the budget session. However, the government has not set aside any funds, as it will be built in public-private partnership mode. While the government will provide the land, a private party would be identified by IL&FS to set up the centre. The Government of Puducherry is awaiting the submission of the Detailed Project Report by the firm. Mr.Shahjahan said that the private party identified will not just set up the centre, but also design its curriculum. “A lot depends on the private party, and what it decides to bring into the scheme.”
