Month-long special drive being launched from Tuesday to step up anti-larval operations

Over 588 teams formed to visit houses and look out for household mosquito-breeding places

HYDERABAD: In light of viral fevers showing an upswing in the twin cities, GHMC Commissioner S.P. Singh sought to assure the citizens that the Municipal Corporation was alert to the mosquito menace and the situation was being tackled as a top priority.

“There is no need to panic as the vector born diseases are under control,” he said, while stating that a month long special drive was being launched from Tuesday to step up anti-larval operations as well as improve the sanitation work.

Appeal to citizens

Over 588 teams (1,764 men) have been formed and each team would visit every house in a week to check for household mosquito breeding places. He appealed to the citizens to cooperate with the entomology teams whenever they visit their premises in conducting the anti-larval operations.

Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Aleem Basha has informed that a fixed schedule has been prepared for the household visits under proper supervision. As many as 60 persons are being deployed each day for cleaning up the Musi River for vegetation, grass mounds and larvicide treatment.

Hospital surveillance too has been intensified to record the actual number of cases recorded every day to take appropriate measures in and surrounding areas of patients’ houses within 24 hours.

The Chief Entomologist, D. Narahari, said 88 portable fog machines and eight vehicle mounted machines were pressed into service. Sufficient quantity of anti larval material was available to last for the entire season, he said.

Mr. Singh appealed to the citizens to contact the nearest municipal office for any help regarding draining of stagnant water or anti-larval operations. He also offered all assistance to the Secunderabad Cantonment and Osmania University for tackling the mosquito menace in their respective areas. Cantonment Executive Officer Ravindra and OU’s Medical Officer Rama Rao attended the meeting.
