Water supply restored

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Water pumping from the Aluva pump house was restored to a large extent by Monday evening, according to the officials of the Kerala Water Authority. The city had gone dry on Sunday without water supply to a large area when the two major electric cable faults resulted in no pumping of drinking water.

The two major cable faults were found in the 11 kV line reaching the Aluva pump house. One line was rectified by the evening and pumping was restored. Work on the second line is going on. “We require only one line to get the pump going”, said a KWA official.

People in most parts of the city and its suburbs including Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Island, Vypeen, Cheranalloor, Aluva, Kalamassery, and Eloor were subjected to much hardship as water supply remained disrupted on Sunday and a good part of Monday. Though pumping was restored in the evening, many of the affected areas were yet to receive water till late Monday evening.

Work on the faulty cables started on Sunday morning. The first cable fault happened on Saturday at midnight and the second line fault happened around 7 a.m. on Sunday that resulted in total disruption of water supply. Aluva is the main pump house that provides treated water from the Periyar to Kochi.
