State visit: The former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga holding talks with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The former President of Sri Lanka Chandrika Kumaratunga has decried lack of basic freedom in her country. The former president, who is on a visit to Kerala, was speaking to the media after calling on Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan at the Secretariat on Tuesday. Ms. Kumaratunga said that there was an overall feeling of fear in Sri Lanka. “I fear for my life, if I speak freely, though my party is in power (as part of a coalition),” she said. The former President said that there was now peace in the north eastern region of her country. However, there were other threats. There were restrictions on basic freedom. The media was suppressed. A large number of mediapersons had been killed in the last two years for making genuine and legal criticisms. “We wish there would be much more freedom. We hope that things will change.” She said she had wanted to visit Kerala for a long time. She was in the State to inaugurate a conference of Rotary International in Kochi. “Kerala and Sri Lanka have historic associations and many similarities. The foods habits are similar,” she added.
