Bangalore: Two doctors from NIMHANS, Prabha S. Chandra and G. Venkatasubramanian, have been honoured by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in recognition of their contribution to the field of mental health. While Dr. Chandra, Professor of Psychiatry in NIMHANS, had been chosen for the Dr. Vidya Sagar Award, Dr. Venkatasubramanian, Assistant professor of Psychiatry, has been honoured with the Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize. The awards, given once in two years to eminent scientists for their outstanding contributions in the field of mental health, carry a cash prize and a citation. Dr. Chandra’s research work in perinatal psychiatry and sexual health in psychiatric disorders had been recognised for the award. She has set up the first Perinatal Outpatient Psychiatry Service in Asia by starting a weekly clinic in NIMHANS. This clinic is meant for women with psychiatric problems during pregnancy and postpartum. The current research at this exclusive service focuses on postpartum mental health, mother infant bonding issues and accidental exposure to medications during pregnancy.
