Congress condemns Mayawati’s statement
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday condemned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s statement in which she “openly in a way called for a civil war” by warning of a serious law and order situation in the country if the monuments and memorial sites dedicated to the Bahujan Samaj Party icons are demolished.
Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said Ms. Mayawati’s statement mocked at the Constitution, challenged the Supreme Court and sent out a clear message that she did not believe in the rule of law. The statement amounted to contempt of court as she was commenting on a matter that was under the Court’s consideration.
Mr. Tewari was hopeful of the Supreme Court taking due notice of Ms. Mayawati’s statement. He said that on the one hand, the State government filed an affidavit in the court, apologising for violating an undertaking given by it, and on the other the Chief Minister used language that could be termed impetuous about a matter that was under the court’s consideration.
