MCC plans anti-tobacco campaign

Special Correspondent

KANNUR: The Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) at Thalassery will organise a painting competition for school and college students in the Malabar region as part of its anti-tobacco campaign.

MCC Director B. Satheeshan said at a press conference here on Saturday that the painting competition would be held at the BEMP High School at Thalassery on October 10. Prizes for 100 best paintings would be distributed at a special function at the MCC located at Kodiyeri, he said. The school with the highest number of participants would be given the MCC’s Anti-Tobacco Campaign trophy.

Mr. Satheeshan said an exhibition of noted artists in the State was also planned as part of the drive. Proceeds from the sale of their paintings would be utilised for the treatment expenses of patients from financially weak families reaching the centre, he said.

An essay competition for school and college students would also be held as part of the campaign, he said. Institutions should send the best five essays each to the MCC. Five essays would be selected out of the entries sent by the institutions, he said.

The MCC Director said the centre would be developed into a major cancer care centre in two years. He said the Malabar region accounted for 35 per cent of cancer patients in the State. The anti-tobacco campaign was part of the initiatives of the MCC to create cancer awareness among the public, he added.
