THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The week ending on September 16 presented Kerala only 25 per cent of the long-term average rainfall for the week, according to the latest weekly update of monsoon rainfall statistics published by India Meteorology Department (IMD). During the week, against an area-weighted normal rainfall of 52 mm, the actual rainfall received by the State came to only 13 mm. This shortfall has pushed up the overall rainfall deficit in the State during the monsoon so far (from June 1 to September 16) to nine per cent from the level of eight per cent a week ago. Rainfall at this stage of the monsoon is excess in the districts of Kozhikode (11 per cent), Palakkad (eight per cent) and Thrissur (four per cent). All other districts are on the deficit side as on September 16: Alappuzha by 22 per cent, Ernakulam by 11 per cent, Idukki by 10 per cent each, Kannur by two per cent, Kasaragod by 15 per cent, Kollam by 25 per cent, Kottayam by 26 per cent, Malappuram by nine per cent, Pathanamthitta by 22 per cent, Thiruvananthapuram by 34 per cent and Wayanad by 28 per cent. The IMD has forecast rain or thundershowers at many places in the State during the next three days, with heavy rainfall occurring in some isolated places. The IMD’s weather models showed the likelihood of relatively heavier showers in central parts of the State during this period.
