THRISSUR: The KSEB capped a fine run and won the men’s title in the 10th Thonath Johnny Champions Trophy State inter-club basketball championship at the Kandasankadavu GHSS Ground here on Saturday night. The electricity board defeated BSNL, also from Thiruvananthapuram, 86-52 in a lopsided final to win the title after a three-year break. The match was expected to be a thriller for KSEB had beaten BSNL, last year’s runner-up by a lone point (92-91) in the league phase. But it turned out to be a very different story. “We learned a lot from our previous encounter against BSNL and used those lessons in the final,” said former international Monish Wilson, the team’s star and a leading scorer in the final with 23 points. KSEB’s young ball handler K.R. Nikhil initiated some smart moves and scattered the defence with his wily game. He found the gaps and frequently fed Priyesh Jacob and Monish and a little after half-time, the BSNL men looked a demoralised lot. Towards the end, with BSNL lowering its guard, Priyesh kept scoring at will and emerged as the team’s top-scorer. Ullas Jose, with 19 points, led the BSNL tally. The scores: KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram) 86 (K.R. Nikhil 14, Monish Wilson 23, Priyesh Jacob 24, C.V. Ratheesh 13) bt BSNL (Thiruvananthapuram) 52 (Mahesh 11, Vijobi Vakkachen 14, Ullas Jose 19). — Principal Correspondent
