Rewarded: The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy distributed books and cash prizes to meritorious students from the Korama-Koracha community at a convention in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE: Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, MP, on Sunday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party Government for sanctioning Rs. 176 crore for the Organic Farming Mission and alleged that it was squandering public money.

Inaugurating a convention organised by the Karnataka State Korama and Koracha Mahasangha here, the Janata Dal (S) leader said he had ordered a subsidy of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 90,000 and Rs. 80,000 for poor students studying in engineering, medical and dental colleges respectively during his tenure as Chief Minister, and this was done despite the disapproval from B.S. Yeddyurappa, who was then the Finance Minister. But it was stopped soon after he quit as Chief Minister.

Recalling the announcement made by Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali that poor students would be given financial help and that even a post card was sufficient for him to act, Mr. Kumaraswamy said he would thank Mr. Limbavali if he extended such help to Korama-Koracha students. Referring to the harsh words used by him against the Chief Minister a few days ago which triggered a controversy, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that an aged man from Gundlupet who had leprosy approached him for an Ashraya house as he had failed to get one even after making several attempts.

He was upset over the plight of the poor man and had made the remarks, the Janata Dal (S) leader said.

Working president of the mahasangha and former MLA G. Chandranna and Mr. Kumaraswamy felicitated the former Minister V.S. Krishna Iyer, who gave a push to the activities for the welfare of Koramas and Korachas in the State.

Its president R. Ramachandra presented a memorandum to Mr. Kumaraswamy .
