10 killed as quake strikes Bhutan

Thimpu: Ten people, including three Indian labourers, were killed on Monday when a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Bhutan.

The tremor, which hit around 2:53 p.m., destroyed houses, monasteries and other buildings across the mountainous country.

A strong quake also shook Assam and tremors were felt in Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and north Bengal.

The deaths and injuries to many occurred as buildings collapsed in Narang Geog, Monggar and Yangneer, east of Bhutan capital Thimpu.

The three Indians were fatally hit by falling boulders in Samdrupjongkhar, state-run Bhutan Broadcasting Service reported. They were involved in the Samdrupjongkhar Trashigang road widening work.

The epicentre of the quake was located just inside Bhutan’s border with India, 180 km east of Thimpu.

Some buildings, most of which were made up of mud and stone, caved in in the impact of the eartquake. — PTI
