TIRUPATI: Liver transplantation is recommended when all other treatment options fail and the patient can lead a fairly normal life, according to Dr.Anand Khakhar, a senior consultant liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He called liver failure, mostly caused by Hepatitis B/C infection, excessive alcohol consumption or primary biliary cirrhosis, a “potentially-fatal” condition in which the liver would stop functioning, resulting in jaundice. Speaking to mediapersons at the Apollo Clinic here, he said that liver transplantation had been introduced by in the form of an exclusive ‘Liver Clinic’ last year.
