Sonia likely to launch initiative by month-end Social Welfare, Tribal Ministries to be roped in NEW DELHI: Seeking to reach out to the poor and the “aam aadmi” at large, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has drawn up a fast-track programme to expand the reach of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to rural India and the remotest areas. It will offer incentives, including free LPG stoves and subsidised LPG cylinders, to the marginalised and poor sections and open thousands of community kitchens. The initiative under the newly adopted rural LPG policy is likely to be launched by the end of this month by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry also proposes to write to the Tribal Affairs and Social Welfare Ministries to be part of this new initiative. To supplement this “Herculean task,” the Ministry is also actively considering providing poor people free LPG stoves. “The idea is to use the funds of the Oil Marketing Companies from the Corporate Social Responsibility kitty to subsidise some of these activities in order to reach out to the people and pass on the benefit to the poorest of the poor in terms of fuel for their daily use,” the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Jitin Prasada, said here. “People living below poverty line will be given free stoves and subsidised LPG,” he said. All the Ministries concerned would be asked to allocate a certain amount of funds for expansion of this programme through their own schemes. Programme“The Social Welfare Ministry can take care of the SC/ST population in terms of subsiding the LPG cylinder and stove and the Tribal Affairs Ministry can ensure expansion of this programme to the tribal belts of the country. We will involve all the stakeholders to make this programme a major success,” Mr. Prasada said.
