Security tightened

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Security has been tightened around colleges across the State as student union poll will be held on Wednesday.

“Why I Stand For”, which is organised for giving candidates a platform to put their action plan for development of colleges and universities, witnessed violence on several campuses on Tuesday.

Police resorted to lathicharge on campus city-based Maharshi College of Natural Law when two groups of students confronted over election campaigning.

Trouble started in the evening when one group of students alleged that their opponent was continuing campaigning violating Lyngdoh Commission recommendations.

The simmering tensions exploded during platform speech. Police had to use baton to disperse students. However, Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) took exceptions to police action.

At a press conference held here, OPCC president K. P. Singh Deo said BJD government was even misusing government machinery in the college elections. Small clashes were reported from other campuses

At Utkal University, presidential aspirants reiterated their commitment to work towards making the university one of the top-notch in the country.

At Kamala Nehru Women’s College, girls danced to the tune of Bollywood numbers.
