Protest against ‘indiscriminate’ grant of permits to private buses

Official urged to act against errant private bus operators

Permits for contract carriages are used to run stage carriages

High Court ruling on parking of private buses being violated

Karwar: Members of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation Staff and Workers’ Union of Uttara Kannada took out a procession here on Tuesday in protest against the “indiscriminate” grant of permits to private bus operators in district.

They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner seeking action against private bus operators who violated the conditions of the permits granted to them.

The union members alleged that some private bus operators, who had obtained permits for contract carriages, were using them to run stage carriages, thereby causing loss to KSRTC.

The union leaders alleged that some private busses plying between Hubli and Sirsi, Karwar and Bangalore, Bhatkal and Uppunda, and Shimoga and Kumta were taking passengers to places to which they had no permits.

Private bus operators violated the Karnataka High Court ruling that private buses should be parked 500 metres away from the KSRTC bus stand. If the KSRTC staff opposed this, private bus crew would resort to “strong arm” tactics. No action had been taken though the matter had been brought to the notice of the police and the RTO, they said.

The union members urged the Deputy Commissioner to take action against private bus operators who violated rules.

President of the union K.R. Mukundan, general secretary I.K. Naik and vice-president P.S. Naik participated in the protest march.
