SCs, BCs to fight it out for deputy mayor post

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Two SC corporators and a BC corporator are in the fray for the post of deputy mayor in the election to be held on September 30.

Siripurapu Phillip Gritton, 18th division corporator, is staking claim to the post on the grounds that the leaders agreed to make him deputy mayor when the post was given to forward caste candidate Samanthapudi Narasaraju, instead of an SC.

The post was promised to him by the then Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao.

The 48th division corporator and follower of Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, Meesala Rajeswara Rao, was a strong candidate for the post last year, but stepped aside for Mr. Narasaraju, who is also a follower of the MP.

Venkata Satyanarayana, 1st division corporator and follower of former Minister Devineni Rajasekhar, was a strong contender for the post in the BC quota.

Though Mr. Rajasekhar was defeated in the last general elections, Mr. Satyanarayana is still in the race for the deputy mayor’s post, this time with the backing of district Minister Kolusu Parthasarothy.

The backing of Mr. Satyanarayana will augur well for the Minister amongst his clansmen, the Yadavas.

Mr. Satyanarayana has the advantage of having held the post earlier.

Being an election year, this may fetch him a few points when compared to his rivals who are relatively greenhorns.
