Top Maoist leader sent to judicial custody

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Kobad Gandhy, an alleged top Maoist leader arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police last Sunday, was produced in a city court that sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Medical check-up

Gandhy was taken to hospital for a medical check-up before being produced in the court as he complained of a chest problem.

The court sent the 63-year-old accused to judicial custody, directing the authorities concerned to provide him medical treatment. He would be taken to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and Lohia Hospital for check-up.

The accused, who was in charge of spreading the organisation’s influence in urban areas, is a member in the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee and the Polit Bureau.

He was arrested near Bhikaji Cama Place on Sunday night. The police raided his residence which was found locked.

It is learnt that they have seized a pen drive from there and its contents are being examined.

Though Gandhy purportedly told the police that he had been living at his present residence for the past few days, intelligence agencies have reason to believe that he had been living in the Capital for several months.
