‘Bala’ is dead

TIRUCHI: R. Balachandran ‘Bala’, noted poet, writer and former convener of the Tamil Advisory Board of the Sahitya Akademi, passed away in Chennai on Tuesday night. He was 63. He is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

Popular for his impressive writings and uprightness, ‘Bala’ handled in a lucid style, both in English and Tamil, various issues concerning the common man.

A former Reader in Department of English, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, ‘Bala’ was widely regarded for his clarity in thought and fearless writings.

He had translated a number of books from English into Tamil and vice versa. He has to his credit several popular books in both the languages.

His taste for modern poetry was exhibited in many of his works.

‘Bala’ was also Executive Committee Member of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi; Governing Board Member, Pondicherry Institute of Language and Culture; Member, Editorial Committee, Encyclopaedia on Indian Poetics, etc.

He has to his credit many awards which include the Government of Tamil Nadu Poetry Prize, State Bank of India award, and ‘Sirpi’ Poetry Prize.

As a representative of Tamil language, he participated in the National Symposium of Poets on the invitation of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 1993. He also participated in the National Conference of Indian Writers held in the US.

The last rites will be performed at Pudukottai on Sunday morning, according to family sources.
