Registering dissent: AIADMK and CPI(M) councillors (on right) walk out from the Corporation Council in Madurai on Thursday. 
MADURAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Communist Party of India (Marxist) separately walked out of the Madurai Corporation Council meeting protesting against the administration of the local body on Thursday. The AIADMK leader, P. Salaimuthu, led his party men out of the council hall protesting against the administration that was “unnecessarily wasting” funds on the public functions in which Union Minister M.K. Alagiri participated, when many welfare schemes could not be carried out “due to cash crunch.” He criticised the Corporation for burdening the common man with “exorbitant” underground drainage charges. “A poor resident who is paying just Rs. 300 as property tax is forced to pay Rs. 1,500 as drainage charges,” he complained. Accusing the administration of taking over the “incomplete” works of underground drainage from the Metro Water despite having been warned, he said that blocks in the underground drainage had led to silt formation in many places. “In many places sewage is mixing with drinking water,” he complained. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, M. Ganesan, criticised the Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, for not conducting council meeting last month. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors, including the Mayor, objected to a remark made by him. Later, the CPI (M) councillors walked out opposing the increase in rates of tax and user charges in the city. On two occasions, the meeting witnessed chaotic scenes with the councillors of ruling and opposition parties making charges against each other. On one occasion, a vada was thrown at the members of opposition parties when they gathered in front of the Mayor’s dais.
